Saturday, April 24th, 2010—Bar 104

Day 104—Friday, April 23rd, 2010

New York Sports Bar (in the LaGuardia airport)

Okay, today’s going to be a bit of a quickety blickety blog as I’m traveling to my hometown of Peoria, Illinois. Another road trip, woo hoo! So I’m hoping to hit an airport bar at LaGuardia airport this morning, because by the time I get back to Peoria I’ll be beat. It’s six in the morning as I type this and I’m usually going to bed now. So let’s make tracks to LaGuardia airport!

And look at that, here we are! Time to find a bar!

This one looks good, let's check it out.

Please order at the bar. Don't mind if I do!

Aaahh! The breakfast of champions!

Looks like I'm the only early morning drinker today. That's okay, more for me!

Leo the bartender uncorks a breakfast Corona for me. Leo was a great bartender and he's moving to Sweden soon. Maybe he'll send us some photos of bars in Sweden. How about it, Leo?

Cheers!

Okay, now the bar is starting to fill up. Let's check out to see who's at the end of the bar.

Shit I gotta go, my flight is taking off soon!

Up, up and away! Goodnight everybody...or, good morning, or...whatever!

Review

I had a nice few early morning Corona’s here and like I say, airport bars are non-judgemental drinking zones. Someday I’ll have to come out here when I’m not flying and properly review a bar out here. Today’s not that day though, my plane takes off in about twenty minutes, so I gotta run! Sneeze you in Peoria tomorrow!

I don’t know the phone number but it’s near the D Gate check in area. I hope I get through security!

Friday, April 23rd, 2010—Bar 103

Day 103—Thursday, April 22nd
Rye House (Originally scheduled for the Chat ‘n’ Chew, then Rosa Mexicano, some days aren’t easy on this bar crawl!)

First off, once more I need to thank Michael Heaton, Cleveland’s Minister of Culture. Not only was he a great and fun host while I was there, he wrote a column about 365 Bars and you can read it here:

365 Bars in Minister of Culture

There’s also a video in the Plain Dealer that you can watch right here:

Micheal Heaton Interview

Thanks again Michael, I owe you mucho beers the next time we crawl together, my friend!

Okay, this is going to go up super early tomorrow morning because the 365 Bar Crawl is on the road again! I’m flying out to Peoria tomorrow and then at the end of the week I’m going to be in Chicago for two days. So while I will be posting every day, times may be erratic. I have my trusty laptop, but there’s no internet at my folks house (I love that!) and I’m hoping to be able to tap in to my brother Tom’s internet at his apartment. So be patient for the next week, but there will be a daily update, it just may not occur around the noon hour like it usually does.

So today I’m off work and I’m going out early in the afternoon to a restaurant down the street called the Chat ‘n’ Chew.
It’s a fun place and I’ve gone there for years. They have a little bar in the front and I thought I’d have an early dinner and drinks there and then come home and pack. So are you ready to chat and chew? Then let’s make tracks!

Okay, I went to the Chat 'n' Chew and was told the manager had to okay photos. So I asked to talk to the manager and she said it was her last day and she couldn't approve it. They were nice about it, but I thought, "If it's your last day, let's go nuts!" I guess not everyone thinks my way, so I left.

So I went to this place which is a block away, Rosa Mexucana. At night the bar here is always packed and the margaritas and food are great. However, when I asked the waitress if I could do the bar crawl thing here, she said I'd have to talk to a manager. So I did. He told me I would have to call the corporate offices and schedule an appointment. Well, I think I'll call their corporate offices right now: Hey corporate offices, sorry I tried to give you free advertising, assholes!

By now I was getting a little reluctant of restaurant bars, but I knew of one a block away, BLT Fish, so I headed in that direction, but lo and behold, on the way there I see a bar I've never seen before. Let's go here!

It looks nice in here, let's see if I can do my bar crawl thing in Rye House.

And before you know it, bartender Aleksy is handing me a beer.

Hooray, the bar crawl is under way at last!

This is just part of the massive whiskey selection available at Rye House.

And when I say massive I mean massive, here's two pages of whiskey and bourbon selections available.

And if you're not a whiskey person, there's plenty of draft and bottled beers to be had.

Tables and booths line the walls opposite the bar.

There's a long communal table in the back.

There's also leather banquettes for private drinking and dining.

They've only been open for six months, but have already won food awards from Time Out New York Magazine.

Speaking of food, here's my dinner, the Pittsburgh Sandwich. It's a sausage sandwich with french fries and cole slaw packed right inside. It was delicious!

Fire! (It never gets old for me! Goodnight everybody, see you in Peoria!)

Review

Rye House is a new whiskey bar in the Flatiron section of Manhattan, they just opened six months ago. The bar is elegant art deco  yet comfortable all at the same time. The front granite bar is impressive and the long communal table in the back guarantees lively converstations with friends old and new. Wooden tables and chairs line the walls for those that want to have a private party or date.

The name is Rye House, so naturally whiskey and bourbon are the stars of the show in this bar.
There was too many for me to count on the menu, suffice to say, if you like whiskey, you need to check this place out. Beer and wine drinkers aren’t left out either. There’s a good selection of bottled and draft beers to be had and the wine list is stellar. The food menu isn’t huge, but filled with eclectic delights like: Truffle grilled cheese, Greek pita, the Rye House Burger and drunken mussels. I had the Pittsburgh sandwich and it’s grilled andouille sausage, provolone, slaw and fries. And it’s all stuffed in between grilled rye bread and it is delicious!

Okay, now I’m off to Peoria! Sneeze you all sometime tomorrow.

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010—Bar 102

Day 102—Wednesday, April 21st
The Blind Pig (Originally Scheduled For The Crocodile Lounge)

First off let me thank my co-worker and manager Decker for donating another 10 bucks to the bar crawl funds in good sweet cash as pictured below.
Decker joins Tiki Bar Susie in the elite few who have donated twice to the bar crawl. I appreciate the donations as I’m traveling around now and expenses are picking up. Thanks Decker!

In my travels a lot of people suggest bars to me and I’ve got a long list of bars stockpiled in my notes.
However the other night a woman was telling me about a bar and then uttered two magical words: Free Pizza! That’s right there’s a bar on 14th and 1st called the Crocodile Lounge that gives away free pizza when you order a drink. I don’t actually know how this whole thing works, but I’m going to find out!

Here's the Crocodile Lounge. The economy must still be in the shitter because this place is beyond packed with people eating the free pizza. it's too crowded and noisy for me to do the bar crawl thing tonight. Plus there's a guy with electric eyeballs in here. i'll come back on a Monday in the next week or two and see if things are slower then. Now time to improvise.

I passed a bar that looked good on the way here, so let's double back up on 14th Street and check that place out.

The Blind Pig. I like the name!

Okay, this is more like it, there's people in here, but it's not packed or crazy loud and there's a seat at the bar. Let the crawl begin!

And bartender MJ serves up the first beer of the evening. MJ is a 23 year long veteran New York bartender who's a great guy to drink and chat with.

Cheers!

This bar rules!

Part of the Blind Pig team: waitress Shannon, manager Richie and waitress Erin. Fun and friendly folks.

There's a huge beer selection available as well as an extensive wine list.

Here's Thorsten and Elkie who are stranded here from Hamburg, Germany due to the Vocano madness. They were taking refuge in the Blind Pig. Cheers to both of you and have a safe trip back!

Vintage prohibition photos adorn one wall in this modern day speakeasy.

Large wooden booths line the walls for group seating.

Josh shows off the Blind Pig menu.

Cain was enjoying a pint at the end of the bar, his brother Abel was unavailable for comment. I think he was passed out in the bathroom.

MJ saw me looking at the Blind Pig accessories available...

And comped me a free hat! Thanks MJ! Great hanging out with you and everyone, a great night out on the crawl! Goodnight everybody!

Review
Blind Pig was a name used to refer to a Speakeasy in the Prohibition era. New York’s Blind Pig is a drink-easy saloon with a long, spacious wooden bar and wooden booths with a festive atmosphere. Rock and roll music is the background noise and the place is loaded with HD TV’s if you want to check out who’s winning the latest games. The bartenders and waitresses are friendly and fun and the clientele is a mix of NYU students and neighborhood regulars. Don’t worry about being a newbie here though, strangers are welcomed and a good time is had by all.

There’s a generous Happy Hour here from 11:00 am till 8 pm every day of the week. In addition to the full bar and nightly drink specials, The Blind Pig has a menu that includes the Blind Pig Burger which is served on a toasted English muffin, plus there’s also  wings, dumplings, fish and chips, mac and cheese and meatloaf. DJ’s spin tunes Thursday, Friday and Saturday for your dancing pleasure.

Check out this modern day speakeasy where you don’t need to know a secret knock on the door to get in.
