365 Beers in Foley's bar, NYC, baseball bars

Day 59—Tuesday, March 9th
Foley’s

I haven’t been to an Irish bar for awhile and I just read about one online where they banned the Irish anthem “Danny Boy.” It got international attention for doing so and the story was covered by the AP, ABC, CBS, FOX, CNN, NBC, NPR and the BBC. I must’ve been sleeping one off, because this is the first I’ve heard of it. I’ve always hated that fucking song, so what are we waiting for, let’s go. Too-rah-loo-rah-loo-rah!

Here we are, Foley's bar.

The bar that banned Danny Boy!

it's got a decent crowd for a Tuesday night and there's enough baseball memorabilia to make your head crash into third base.

Super-friendly and lovely Sinead serves up an ice-cold Iron City can of beer which costs just three bucks, perfect for my 365 budget.

See what bending your elbow can do to your shirt sleeves? As I've warned before, don't try this at home, kids.

Baseball memorabilia is strewn throughout the bar like confetti on New Year's Eve.

It's the return of my Master Boozer awards! Sean recieves this one for being the first to pose with his empty pint. Cheers to you, Master Boozer of the evening!

Baseball memorabilia part II: Baseball cards and collectibles under the table glass.

Tom and Patrick were waiting for dinner and posed for a photo. Cheers, guys!

The Gent's Room warns of foul balls. The George Michael's of the world thanks you for this warning, Foley's!

The owner of Foley's, Shaun Clancy poses in the Gent's Room next to the legendary urinals which were transplanted from the orginal Waldorf-Astoria hotel.

More baseball collectibles and memorabilia.

James was visiting from England and chose to spend his last night in New York in Foley's.

Yes, that's right, more baseball memorabila.

Here's Joe, a regualar at Foley's who lives right down the block. He's enjoying a cold Smithwicks.

Foley's is a baseball bar with balls!

Here's Alex and Yuri at a side table flashing the 365 Bars card.

My new motto!

Holding down the far end of the bar are: Curt, Carlos and Steve. Steve is the "Norm" regular of the bar. He's been coming here for over 19 years! When asked if the neighborhood had changed, he said, "Only the faces have changed." Cheers guys!

And on the way home, Cabbie Conversations, part II. Goodnight everybody!

Review

Owner Shaun Clancy label’s his bar, Foley’s as an, “Irish Bar with a baseball attitude.”
When you visit Folely’s I think you’ll agree with me that he should change the word “attitude” to “obsession.” This place is a baseball fan’s dream bar. Just some of the memorobilia includes 300 baseball bobble-head dolls, vintage seats from the original Yankee Stadium circa 1974, there’s 130 jersey’s hanging from the ceiling and over 2000 baseballs signed by diverse sports stars and celebrities including Bono, Joe DiMaggio, Kirk Douglas, Derek Jeter and porn star Marilyn Chambers, who definitely has seen her fair share of balls. Rimshot.

The bar has a friendly “Cheers”-like vibe to it with regulars and bartenders that are just as friendly to first timers as they are to veterans to the tavern. Beers include, Heineken, Magners and Amstel Light in bottles, Guinness, Smithwiick’s and Harp on tap and Iron City in cans. There’s a full food menu including burgers, sandwiches, pizza and mini chili dogs. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday and it offers omelets, Foley’s French Toast, steak & eggs with fries and a Traditional Irish Breakfast consisting of: Two eggs any style w/ irish bacon, irish sausages, black and white pudding, fries and toast.

And no Danny Boy! The pipes, the pipes are calling...whoops, I better stop or I’ll never get back in.
