Tuesday, March 16th, 2010—Bar 65

Day 65—Monday, March 15th
The Australian

Last night I got a donation from Australia! David Brooks sent me ten bucks from the land down under!

Total amount: $10.00 USD
Purpose: Valid for 1 Coopers Pale Ale
Contributor: David Brooks

David said in an email That Coopers is brewed in the state where he lives in Australia and he Googled and found an Australian bar in Manhattan called, “The Australian,” and asked if I would go there and buy a Cooper’s Green with his money. David, I like the way you think, mate! Let’s head off to get a tinny at The Australian, blokes and blokesses!

Here we are at the Australian. G'day mates!

There's a decent sized crowd in here for a Monday night.

I order up a Cooper's Green from the bartender Rodrigo and he holds up the thank you sign to my mate David who's buying the beer.

And here I am with the Cooper Green! Cheers, David, good on ya!

Here's Bill and his friend Chuck. Chuck is not pictured (you had to be there folks.)

Here's Kenny, the ohter barkeep on duty. Kenny told me there were 26 big screen TV's in The Australian.

Then he counted them and  realized there were 23. Thanks for keeping me factually correct and full of beer Kenny! Good man!

Carli was enjoying a drink and had seen 365 Bars on the Guest of a Guest website.

There's lots of tables and booths in the back room.

Here's Mike and Ulli. They are part of a special event happening at The Australian tonight (March 16th) which is a party that benefits the Vitamin Angels group. Read about the charity here: Vitamin Angels. And call The Australian for party details tonight. It's a good cause and it sounds like a great party, I hope you can stop by.

There's more tables in the front room.

Okay, check out these blokes! Toby, Wes and Steve were in town from Australia and enjoying drinks at a slice of Australia in Manhattan. Cheers, guys!

The walls of The Australian are lined with beer ads from the land of Oz.

Here's an aerial shot of the bar.

Fire! (I never get tired of this joke, I know you do, but bear with me!)

Matt the owner of The Australian. Matt's originally from Australia and has been in the states for eight years and opened The Australian two and a half years ago.

I was on the way out the door when Ulli's son and friend showed up in a taxi. From left: Marko, Ulli and her son Max. Max said Marko is his brother from another mother. And don't forget Ulli's party tonight for Vitamin Angels at The Australian. Call the bar for details, it's a good deal for a good cause.

Steve sends cheers to fellow Australian David Brooks. Goodnight everybody!

Review

The Australian is a slice of the land down under right in the heart of midtown Manhattan, mate. Chuck a sickie and check out this billabong. The bartenders and patrons are friendly and the odds of meeting someone from the land of Oz are good. Australians are friendly and best of all, they know how to drink! There’s a large bar and tables in the front and back as well as a second tier room up top.

It’s authentic Australian down to the last drop as you sample some of the Aussie brew including, Tooheys New, James Boags and four different brands of Cooper’s (I suggest Cooper’s Green which was suggested by new mate, David Brooks). And of course there’s Foster’s in the oil can. The Australian also has a full bar and an extensive wine list. And if you’re in the mood for a little authentic Oz tucker the Australian offers up some Aussie delights such as, Aussie Meat Pie, Sausage Rolls, Bangers and Mash and they offer an Australian Tasting for Two.

Happy hour is 4-7pm and they have reduced appetizer prices, wine is five dollars a glass and draft beer goes for four bucks.

If you’re in New York, and have a hankering for the land down under, giveTthe Australian a burl. And don’t worr,y I didn’t see vegemite listed on the me!u. Thanks again to Oz-native David Brooks for finding the Australian and buying me a Cooper’s Green. Next time you’re in New York, the beer’s are on me mate! G’day!
