Thursday, October 14th, 2010—Bar 277

Day 277—Wednesday, October 13th, 2010
Shades of Green Pub

Okay, usually I write this before I go out, but today I’m writing it in the morning because yesterday at work was so maddening I almost took this blog down because after the day and night I had I really just wanted to go home and crash and burn. It was over twelve hours of stressful craziness. I really wasn’t in the mood to do this anymore, but I decided to go to a bar nearby where I live and once I was there things got better. In fact I overstayed my visit and now I’m running late for work. So, here we go.

Okay, here we are, boy do I need a drink.

Plenty of seats at the bar, that's a good thing.

And an even better thing is friendly and hospitable bartender Paul serving up the first beer of the evening.

Cheers to the end of a horrible night.

As you can see, it's a nice long, wooden bar in here.

Here's some pictures of the homeland in front of the bar.

Some of the drafts available at the bar.

Hey Bifferoonie, you seeing this shit?

A shot from my perch at the bar.

Here's a bottle of Dan Aykroyd's Crystal Head Vodka

Stools basking in the neon light from the window.

The obligatory barroom mirror shot.

There's tables lining the walls opposite the bar.

Vintage photos hang over them.

In the back of a bar is a full dining room.

A shot of the bar from the other end of things.

I wasn't going to do any meet and greets, but what the hell, I've had a few drinks, let's see who's at the end of the bar.

They turned out to be great people and were very supportive of the 365 bar crawl idea. Here we are drinking shots. From left: Yours Fooly, Lisa and Javier.

And one look out the window and it's time to leave. Goodnight, everybody!

Review

I’m already late for work so I have no time to write a review. Here’s one from New York Magazine. And it’s off to work I go. Ecch.

-------------------------------

Galway native Pat Cormican opened Shades of Green Pub & Restaurant in 1990, and he’s been tending bar at this Irish pub near Union Square ever since. And with stints at watering holes in Kiltormer and Dublin before coming Stateside, Cormican clearly knows Irish pubs: He has worked to ensure that the place has an authentic Irish feel, inserting wooden booths along the walls of the front and back of the bar to create plenty of room for customers to enjoy a Guinness and engage in hearty conversation. Expect to find a mixed crowd of locals, tourists, and sweaty fans stopping in after catching a show at the nearby Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza. The food is pub grub, with shepherd’s pie and potato soup among the menu highlights.  — Sam Dangremond

@Shannon: I agree, that is my kind of place also. I really think that irish and british pubs have really got this thing down, and they are usually my favorites. You always see plenty of wood,,,subdued lighting, not too much crapola and plenty of good cheer. Marty,,,hang in there buddy, even in dire straits you still find a great bar. Remember,,,,most of the bars you find,, like this one,,, is usually ten times better than most bars outside NY. This typical irish pub is excellent, and Shadey Ale on tap?

We all stand in awe of your perseverance Marty, you keep a murderous schedule. But you keep finding all these great old places even on your worst days. I know that sometimes this crawl must make you feel like Cool Hand Luke nearing the end of his hard boiled egg eating binge, but you're too near the end to quit now! Get MAD at them damned beers bwah...GNAW on 'em!!

Thanks everybody, I appreciate the encouragement and comments and it's well-needed these days. And now, it's off to work I go. Ecch!

I am so sorry that you had a crappy day at work. It sounds quite arduous. I would need a drink after that as well.

That looks like a very cool bar, and I like it very much!

There's alcohol and a cash register in the bathroom? I NEED to go to THIS bar!

@marty...i agree with jaws, but instead of referring to Cool hand Luke, you remind me more of Gaylord Focker off Meet the Parents.....& for fuks sake if its gettin' that bad mate, get ya arse into gear & get down here & i'll teach ya how to burp Barry!!!...Baz is always good for a littl' attitude adjustment, he'll fix up ol' mate!!!

Marty, is Shades of Green the pub that used to be Tramps? Wish I could go back in time and see Big Joe Turner again there!

Hope to buy you a beer soon,

K

I AM seeing that shit and they're playing my tune! Yay, Shades of Green, for your beer specials! And nice place to drink 'em in, too! Dark, cozy, and potato soup..ahhhh. Just warn me if there's a big show at the Fillmore. Sweaty fans aren't as fun as they were when I was 20.

@365: Fantastic to see you survived another day of hard slog. I'm not much of an office guy myself, but by working in your job you've created the most golden opportunity for yourself....the opportunity to unwind after work with a few mates (mates being Bud, Pabst, Guinness). We're not expecting much chit chat from you in the next couple of days so we'll all see you out on the crawl in coming days.

To Wombacher!

@Mike Litoris: Howdy Mike! It's a photo of the Bar room mirror. I don't know if I'd use that bathroom if it had a cash register in it. That would mean you would have to pay to piss!

@Fitzy: ha ha ha Gaylord Focker. We gotta get the Martian down here for a barbie and some sun.

@Mike Litoris: What Clacky said.

@Fitzy: Go Focker yourself! I'd be there if I could, mate! I'm getting a Mega-Millions ticket tomorrow. If I hit it, I'm heading towards Oz with a suitcase of sunscreen!

@Grade "A" Karen: Now that you mention it, it may have been. I saw Alex Chilton when he reunited with the original Box Tops in the mid '90's there. Great place to see a show. Terry the owner now owns the Bar, One and One.

@Tim Clack: Thanks for the good wishes! Today sucked too, but I will do my bar crawl duty with a happy face. Now...back to work. FUUUUCCCKKK!

Hang in there, even on a tired night this is fun to hang out with you! Don't stop the crawl!

Definitely agree with Jaws on the awe of your perseverance! Really like the picture of the stools with the light on them. Even if I need a back rest, I like the pic :) So sorry work has been so shitty. Hope that changes for you soon!!

@kari: Thanks, I'm working today, but at least I'll be in there alone. Good to see you back here!
