Day 303—Monday, November 8th, 2010
The Delancey

Last night I ran into Frank Wood, who I met on the very first night of this bar crawl back on January 10th at Otto’s Shrunken Head. Every year Frank has a ten day birthday party at various clubs around town and it’s dubbed, “The Ten Days Of Wood.” (Insert Viagra joke, here.) Tonight’s the fourth night of this festival of Wood and it’s happening at The Delancey, a club I’ve always wanted to go to. So let’s seize the moment and go get some Wood. (Insert Beavis and Butthead laughter, here.)

There's no sign outside, but this is 168 Delancey, so I guess this must be the place.

And look who's outside having a smoke, it's Shannon, Clacky's better half. She was hanging out with this guy, who's name is...

Marty! That's right, another excuse for a "Marty Squared" photo.

After the photo, Marty told me to check out the pipe behind us. More Martyness! Too weird!

And then I about shit as I looked down on the ground. It's full-blown Martymania, people!

Here's the ground level bar/lounge area. As you can see, it's really dark in here.

Here's a flashed photo to give you a better look.

The lovely and friendly Brit served up an ice-cold bottle of Budweiser and flashed the 365 card.

Here's the comfortable lounge area in the back. The live music happens in the basement bar and that's where Frank's party was happening, so let's go check that out.

And here we are. Wow, that loud scarf is drowning out the music. Who the hell would be wearing such a thing?

Why it's none other than Clacky along with Shannon. Great to have them back on the crawl!

Here's some "10 Days of Wood" posters, but where the hell is Frank?

Oh well, let's go get a drink at the bar. Hey, look who's there, the other Marty. That figures, all of us Marty's think alike!

Noora's the super-cute bartender on duty down here, and she breaks 365 tradition by giving us a two finger salute.

And look who shows up, the birthday boy, Frank Wood! We drink a shot and toast the "10 Days of Wood!" Cheers!

Hey, I think I see another familiar person in the crowd...

It's Lani, who was the first bartender pictured on the bar crawl at night number one, back at Otto's Shrunken Head, the same night I met Frank. This whole thing is coming full circle!

Lani also appeared on night number 63 when her band Stark played at Arlene's Grocery, here's a shot from that night. Lani and Stark are playing tonight at the Delancey and you should check them out, they're a great band.

Here's Frank introducing one of the acts of the evening, Marni Rice.

It's unbelievable the sound they get out of an accordion, a bass and Marni's vocals. It's like cabaret meets punk rock, really a unique sound.

A wonderful stage act!

Here's Frank with the next artist on the bill, singer/songwriter, Patti Rothberg.

And here she is on stage singing her great original tunes.

Patti's performed on the Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman and Canada's Much Music. Don't forget to check out her website here: Patti Rothberg.

And a triple flip from Shannon, Frank and Clacky, goodnight, everybody!

Review
Once again I’m going to be lazy and not write a bar review of this fine establishment. I have to run some errands and then get into work. Here’s what the New York Citysearch reviewer has to say about the joint:

---------------------------------

Nestled at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge, this three-story nightclub summons the young, the broke and the devastatingly hip. Cute 20-somethings wearing side-swept bangs and distressed jeans catch the East River breeze in the lounge on the first floor. Behind them, a long bar and DJ booth lead to the back room--a cozy, red velvet-swathed seating area. Downstairs, mirrored walls work to expand a small space with a stage that attracts buzz-worthy bands and DJs. There's usually a line for the rooftop bar, but it's worth the wait. Atop the faux island getaway, palm fronds wave in the wind and guests mingle among the patio tables, a fountain and an umbrella-topped bar. Monday through Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm and Thursday from 5pm to 7pm, drinks are $2 off. A bonus in summer: The roof isn't too crowded in the early evening.

Here’s some more shots and captions from the Australian on the move in the Big Apple! Take it away, Clacky!

A night shot on Fifth Avenue.

All the single ladies!!!

Before...

And after...come on folks! the puppy was the cutest thing ever. I couldn't let her go to waste!

Literally Chilling out on Marty's balcony before dinner, last Saturday night.

Clacky and Shannon scored tickets to the Letterman show and he sent in two photos early this morning, but there were no captions. Here's an autographed photo of Aerosmith.

And while you can't take photos at the Letterman show, here's the next best thing, Clacky and Rupert from Hello Deli!

TO Frank Wood!
The most New York New Yorker I've met since I've been here.
The Delancey was great and the booze helped to make the walk home a bit easier as it was freezing out. Marni was brilliant. That bass sound was thunderous.

Wow, another epic crawl with characters from the past! I checked out all the links and there's some amazing music going on, I love that you always include other people's links to their websites, a real sharing of the arts going on here at the 365 crawl! @Clacky: Loved the "before" and "after" photos, but I think Peta's going to be knocking on your door! LOL!

Hey! Between the 1 & the 9! Memories...light the corners of my cobwebby mind... Good to see her rocking out. Kudos to Lani and Stark, too! For some reason, your description of Marni Rice makes me think of Blue Velvet. I'll definitely have to check it out. FRANK, you fellow Scorpio, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Your 10 Days of Wood puts my Festival of Biff to shame. I'm going to have to really, really concentrate on getting to know more musicians before next November. Because alls I got was Bieber and a vuvuzela. Anyhoo, seems like you all had a great time out and The Delancey looks like just about the perfect bar. Next time I force you to walk across the Williamsburg Bridge, I promise we'll stop here for a nerve-soother or three. To the roof, Marty! To the roof!

@365;"Uhhh..huh huh huh...huh huh huh...check it out Bevis, he said Wood!" "Yeah yeah yeah, Butthead...mmmmBOIYOIYOIYOIIIING!"
@ The Clackster...I heard the PETA people just bought a contract on you...keep your head down, dude!
Great bar...big time entertainment! Love Patti's website!

TO THE FESTIVAL OF BIFF! And you're right, I should've checkd out the roof, but it was getting late and my bad ear was ringing like an out of control school bell.

@Jaws: Heh...hehheheheheh! I said Wood!

Lani is very photogenic,,,probably creates lot's of " Wood" moments, Does she still tend over at Otto's Shrunken P*nis Head?

November 9, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAl

@Al: I'm pretty sure Lani is still bartending over at Otto's. Sadly, Otto's had an electrical fire about a month ago and they've just re-opened the front room and they're working on the back room. I need to stop in and have a beer next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Marty I wasnt on today "Boris" was. i will look and see if i still have her when i get back...
If not I will rescore her stuff and play her just for you:)

@Biff: Frank took us up to the roof bar. It was so cool with a retractable roof for when it rains! Indoor palm trees make it seem more like a tropical oasis in an otherwise danky part of the city. I Heart NY!

@Gidget: Thanks and have a good trip!

@Tim Clack: Glad you made it up there with Frank!

Heya Marty...we're gonna catch Frank's band tomorrow night not because of the music but because...(in Frank's words) "All the musicians are over 45 and none of the female back up singers are over 26".
Sold! Just had some nachos and several beers at the Hop Devil Grill on St. Marks. Good Stuff!
Hope ya works going smoothly tonight. We'll catch another night of the crawl on Thursday depending on how you're travelling on the job.

@PETA and 365 crawlers: (People Eating Tasty Animals) The puppy photo as taken in a pet shop in Chelsea...and the window of opportunity to make such a great gag was closing (mainly because I was a bit drunk and didn't want to spend too much time at the computer). It was like a puppy buffet where all the dogs were on display to be sold. I think this little Daschund...(or Sausage dog) was on sale for around $500. I would have bought her but we already have a gigantic lump of a hound back home to deal with....I'm a dog lover but a also love hotdogs...and dogs also love hotdogs....

...BTW...
The Sandwich at Rupert Jee's was excellent. I had the Allan Kalter and even though he was quite busy he still made time to let Shannon get this photo of us.
To Rupert Jee!

@Tim Clack: Say hi to Frank and the gang for me, I'd go, but I've already done that bar and my ear is still ringing! Thursday would be good as GENE and the BBC are in and you can meet them. Jason may be along as well, he wants to show you his pinhole camera. And of course...TO RUPERT JEE!

I totally LIKE that loud scarf!

November 10, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermeleah rebeccah

To 10 Days of Wood! I could use just one. Just saying...

Yay for Martymania!I like live music to add to my bar experience. And if you don't like the music, well just drink more.

I adore David Letterman and the closest I got to his show was a pic out front of the studio. But I did get a pic with Rupert and he was very nice. That was 10 yrs ago, glad to see he is still getting visitors. And he looks exactly the same!

And I love that you have a balcony!
