Wednesday, July 28th, 2010—Bar 199

Day 199—Tuesday, July 27th, 2010
The SKINnY

Yesterday Nick Beal left this comment on the latest bar he’s been obsessing over: “hoping bar 200 is the skinny tonight!” Well, Nick, you asked for it, you got it, my friend! But the only problem is that tonight is bar number 199. I seem to remember you saying that you had five bucks on the SKINnY being bar number 200, so it’s time to pony up! The donation button is just over there to the right. Okay, let’s go see what the SKINnY is all about!

Here we are, The SKINnY Lounge on the Lower East Side.

The bar lives up to its name, it sure is skinny in here and there's a full crowd at the bar.

I manage to squeeze into a spot and the cute and friendly bartender Deborah serves up a Pabst tallboy.

They were also giving away free vodka drinks, so here's a double-fisted toast, cheers!

The front area is a lounge with black leather couches and candle-lit tables.

Here's your choice of canned and bottled beers.

The lovely Hannah was seated next to me at the bar and was enjoying the free vodka offerings.

The bar is well stocked and you won't go broke drinking here.

Just one of the many drink specials offered at The SKINnY.

All of a sudden it was really crowded in here and my claustrophobia kicked in.

Jaclyn and Jordan are two of the regulars in the bar. They're friendly people and were very supportive of the 365 bar crawl, cheers to both of you!

The front of the bar has filled up, this place is lively for a Tuesday night.

And on the eighth day God created the disco ball.

Julie and Nikki were more than happy to pose for the 365 camera.

In fact they wanted a second shot as well, here you go gals!

JFortino was enjoying a cocktail at the bar. He's a singer and songwriter and you can check out his work here: JFortino. His choice of eye wear seems to be a little bit influenced by Elton John.

They screen films and have trivia questions on the screen hanging from the ceiling in front.

Meanwhile Deborah's hard at work behind the bar.

This was Mike and Tim's first time in the bar and they happily flash the 365 card. Thanks, guys!

Here's the pool table in the tiny second floor area.

And I leave you with a birds-eye view of the SKINnY in all its glory and action. Goodnight, everybody!

Review
The SKINnY is aptlly named as you’ll see as you enter this narrow, railroad styled saloon. The front is a lounge area equipped with black leather couches pinned up to the red and black walls. The bar is as tall as it is skinny with 20 foot ceilings and a small mezzanine just big enough to house a pool table on a second floor. The wooden bar is in the middle and the bartenders are friendly and the crowd is mainly neighborhood regulars. There’s a small dark back room where more often than not you’ll find couples in the act of drunken public displays of affection. DJ’s blast rock, punk and funk from a second floor booth.

There’s a full bar and while there’s no draft beer there’s a good selection of bottled beer and 16 ounce cans of Pabst.
There’s lots of drink specials here including a generous happy hour that runs from 5pm to 9pm, Monday through Saturday with three dollar well drinks, 16 oz. Pabst cans, Bud, and Bud Light and all other beers are four bucks. Thursday’s offer five bucks and under drinks all day and all night. Sunday through Wednesday you can get a 16 ounce Pabst and a shot of your choice for five dollars.

And that’s the skinny on The SKINnY. You happy Nick Beal?

Wow, what a very cool bar!! I would really enjoy visiting there some day. The fun and cool looking people and nice bartenders and the decor looks quite cool.

Great review Marty!

rats. i was so hoping it would be # 200. OK. I'll pay up. Too bad you missed Hilary. I will let Mrs.Peel know you finally showed up. Now which bar should I suggest?

July 28, 2010 | Unregistered Commenternick beal

@nick beal: So close but yet so far away! It was a good suggestion, I had a great time there and it's a fun bar with friendly people.

Skinny looks a hell of of a lot like International Bar. Long narrow shotgun bar. Look's dark in there too. It seems to me that the Lower East Side and the Village is the goldmine for my kind of bars,, small, dark, wooden, old, etc. Great bar, and crowded for a weekday,,good job again Marty.

Now I have to be a SKINnY bar hater. Life is so complicated. Ugh.

Thanks for giving us "The SKINnY".
Wow. Number 200 tonight.
That should be good for some Press.
Seems like just yesterday...
Sorry I missed your call yesterday.
Maybe we can catch up tonight.

Can't believe the crowd in there for a Tuesday night, but after seeing all those drink specials and free vodka I guess it makes sense. Another good night on the crawl!

That disembodied hand with the dangling disco ball made me think for a minute that you'd finally lucked into a haunted bar...a ghost from the mid nineteen seventies! Was it a trick of the light, or do you have some dark circles under your eyes in that double toast picture...think you'll make it to bar 365, Marty? I worry about you boy....your schedule would be wearing me down to the critical point by now!

July 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJaws the Cabbie

@Jaws: I've always had dark circles under my eyes, I'm not critical yet, but I appreciate the concern! I have high hopes to make it to 365 and with every drink it gets higher and higher!

Not much space to move around in there - I'll have to stop by some day when I want to touch people. Free vodka shots would probably help put me in the mood. All in all, looks and sounds like a great place. I like all the red and...what is that around the pool table? Tiled walls? Shiny wallpaper? Whatever it is, I like it. T-shirts look cool too. I did notice that only about half the bars on this crawl stock Miller Lite. Is there something I should know about my favorite beer? Am I unconsciously supporting the Sandanistas? Or, worse yet, Scientologists? Please let me know and in the meantime, I'm going to get to work on acquiring a taste for PBR.

Hey! What's that out front?! ATM! ATM!

Or MTA, if you're reading its reflection.

It MAY be wise to have your liver checked after this year is up ;p

Cheers!

@Joey D: I can't believe I missed that!

@Darleya: I'm taking maximum amounts of milk thistle, hoping to counter the effects. Cheers back atcha!

Slick little Bar the Skinny one is!!
Only problem I have with this whole site is that every time I log on I'm usually having my morning coffee and breakfast before work and and won't get to consume any booze until around 10pm! and it's now 9:30am! Boooo!
I can see a a couple of beers in my fridge right now and think I could easily slam one down before I head off but....goddam work ethic!!
Hey can somebody tell me what a 'Well Drink' is? Does it mean "Well, I just can't decide" or "Well, I guess I could have both"?

July 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim Clack Downunder

@Tim Clack: I like your definitions of a well drink! Well said! Basically a well drink is one that uses cheaper booze in it, not something fancy schmancy like Patron tequila. You're basically letting the bar choose the brand, which if it's cheaper, that's fine with me. Sorry to hear it's morning there, in about three to four hours I'll be throwing down the drinks!

July 28, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

@tim clack: i like your definitions too! LOL! the skinny is a great name for this place. cute bar, cute bartender and cute customers. i love hannahs hair, she looks like a mod chick from the 60s!

July 28, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJHwang

Looks like a fun bar, but a little tight for my likings. But hey if there are places for drunken PDA, maybe I could make an exception.

July 28, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterkari

unless there is a hot bartender i want to grope... or even the hot door guy from last week.. count me out.. no drunken PDA's for me...
i lived in a railyway flat and vowed never to do skinny ever again..and if you saw my ass you'd know this was true!
hey and Marty the trader Joe guy died...
happy wednesday!
here's to 200 tomorrow( well tonight right now for you)
