Day 218—Sunday, August 15th, 2010
Becky’s (Originally headed for Maya)Okay, I had planned on going to Coney Island today, but it’s been raining and they’re predicting thunderstorms all though the night. I’m not going to take the long subway ride just to have it rain on my parade. Coney Island’s open till the end of September, so I’ll try a Sunday before it closes.
I’m really craving Mexican food tonight (which always makes me think of facebook—you had to be there, and some of you were!) and found a Mexican restaurant on the Upper East Side which sounds great. It’s called Maya and the reviews I’ve read all give it high marks. And best of all, they have a bar (and I’m craving a Michelada—hello Tiki Bar Susie!) So...¡está apagado al maya que vamos, arreeeba!
I thought I'd splurge and take a cab rather than the subway.
And here's the obligatory camera out the cab window shot.
Here we are at Maya. I know Kari likes this place already!
We're too late for happy hour, but I can't wait to see the bar and lounge.
Well, the bar is about the size of a postage stamp and it's more than overcrowded. Looks like it's time to improvise...
And so begins a lonely walk in search of another bar and it's really starting to rain out here.
Well, after walking just a block, look at this. Let's check it out.
A few too many TV's for my taste, but fuck it, it's dark in here and I'm wet and starvin' like Marvin. Welcome to Sunday's bar.
Chris was the friendly bartender on duty and he happily served me up an ice-cold Budweiser.
Some of the lit-up bottles at the bar.
There's a nice view of First Avenue outside of the open windows up front.
Waitress Danielle was wearing this T-shirt because she lost a bet. I'll never tell what it says!
Some of the signage on the wooden walls in Becky's.
There's tables and chairs in the back.
A view of the bar from the back.
Here's Jake, a sometime regular with Danielle who's still hiding that shirt. Hey, you want to know what it says, go ask her, I'll never tell!
There's a large selection of drafts available at the bar.
Okay, time for my Sunday dinner. Chris suggested the Philly Cheese Steak Wrap. Sounds good to me.
Ask and you shall receive. Chris brings the dinner and it looks great.
Delicious!
Cheese, steak and peppers, mmmm.
Burp. Goodnight, everybody!
ReviewBecky’s is a no-frills, come as you are pub. The bar is dark and wooden and lots of TV’s line the upper perimeter, all tuned to sports. The bartenders are friendly and so is the crowd, which are mainly neighborhood locals. It’s a relaxing place and there’s no attitude in here. Just a nice place to hang out and have a few drinks in a friendly surrounding.
It’s a full bar with an impressive 24 draft beers available. They also have a decent bottled beer selection and happy hour runs from Monday though Friday from 11am to 7pm featuring 4 dollar well drinks and wines, $3.25 bottles of Bud and Bud light and $4.40 pints.
The menu is your standard pub grub selection including wings, burgers, fish and chips and chicken pot pie. There’s also a half dozen varieties of ten inch pizza available including: Margarita fresh mozzarella and basil; Fajita steak or chicken with onions, peppers and salsa; Wisconsin premium cheese pie and a Veggie pie with mushrooms, onions and peppers.

Nothing at all wrong with Becky's, it's got all the makings of a really good bar. Dark, lots of wood, plenty of tap beer, and good bar food. Sort of an irish bar, huh? Bahston?
@Al: More Irish than Bahston, no chowdah on the menu!
They should lose a few of the TV's, but other than that, a nice place and that wrap looks delish!
I like a bar that posts "no spitting." Becky's looks like a great place and your dinner looked yummy. Plus, from 11 to 7, you can get a happy ending! Hooray!! Sorry you didn't get to go to Coney Island and that your Mexican venture panned out, but I'm glad you found this joint instead. I look forward to paying them a visit sometime soon. I just hope it's after baseball season, because the words "umpire analysis" appearing on the big screen make me think of uncomfortable medical procedures which may or may not involve the poop shoot.
I'm having Mexican food for dinner!
"I'm having Mexican food for dinner!"
You and everyone else on facebook, Bifferoonie! Ha ha ha!
Again, the final stop proves to be better than what was originally planned.
I love the fact that I can get a "Happy Ending" for $6.
Hell, I'll toss in a tip and make it a Sawbuck.
Inquirin' Minds gots ta know!
Do tell Danielle!
A great Sunday Stop!
@"Boris": Ha ha ha!
This would be a golden opportunity for a little free promo for 365...give Danielle a complimentary 365 t-shirt! You've got me insanely curious as to what the one she was wearing really said!
This Bar Looks Cool & The Food Lokks Awsome !!
I don't mind the TV , if they would play cartoons on them !! or Adult Swim's Robot Chicken .
Cheers
Upon further review, it looks like a "BAHSTON RED SOX" shirt to me judging from the Font.
Kudos to Danielle if that's the case for wearing it.
I need to stop here when in town.
HA Ha! I just went to read again the Mexican Food Story (link), one of the best story you wrote :) I miss The Marty Wombacher Show!
What is that sign on the wall??? "visit a bar where soccer is football, french fries are chips and a Fanny, well,l you know" !!!! SO FUNNY !!! HAHA

Hi Marty!!
Sorry that Maya was so busy but Becky's looks like a really neat little bar. Chris is a very handsome bartender and Danielle is beautiful and it cracks me up that she is always covering up the front of her shirt. LOL
Nice place that Becky's....I like it!
well well well...another gem with the "originally headed for" tag...food looks great as well as the staff...another nice stop on the crawl...about the shirt...'cause danielle was wearing it 'cause she lost a bet...had to be a novelty shirt and she was a little embarrassed wearing it...if i was a betting man and could find a taker...my money would be on...Bahston Sawks Cack...KOC

p.s. If you don't understand this tee, call up Matt Damon and have him read it to you in that fake-ass Boston accent of his...KOC

great bar, good prices/atmosphere & loved the Ireland coat of arms sign...
that cheesesteak sure looked delicious!
I don't really see anything I would like at Maya.....oh the wood! Yeah that's some nice stuff :) Becky's nice too, extra nice since its the name of my bud. Would be better if you took away a few tv's but its still a nice looking place. Lots of nice wood there too. And hello Chris ;)
I too, was planning to have Mexican tonight.....as i posted on facebook........but at the last minute i decided on opening a can of Dinty Moore's canned Pimento LoaF ! Glad i did.! Will be doing my own crawl starting august 28! First stop, Nashville, Then 3 nights in New Orleans, On to Lafayette and then to Memphis for a Dyer's burger cooked in 90 year old grease! This bar seemed cool and the food looks good! I'll try and check up on the crawl while i'm getting loaded in the south! Cheers!
I like this place - been here a few times - and it's a regular BBC stop .... even though they could use a few more tv's -- how can I watch 13 football games at the same time here ?
@Professor Dungpie: I'm McLovin' it! Send pictures from the road!
@GENE: Ha ha ha!
