Thursday, August 19th, 2010—Bar 221

Day 214—Wednesday, August 18th, 2010
Zum Schneider

There’s a bar I’ve been wanting to go to for awhile called Zum Schneider, but I had to avoid it during the World Cup madness, check out this posting over at the EV Grieve site: Lined up for Zum Schneider.  Zum Schneider is an indoor beer garden and it would be something a little different on the 365 bar crawl. Tomorrow is their 10th anniversary, so I figured tonight it may not be super-crowded. The bar doesn’t appear to be very big, so hopefully it won’t be filled up and I can snag a seat. Let’s go...macht shnell!

The bar is open and there's tables outside.

But I prefer the inside, especially if it's dark and candle lit like this place.

And there's a seat at the bar.

Bartender Tim serves up a giant-sized German wheat beer.

Cheers!

Chela was seated next to me at the bar and her sister works here. Chela's a chef who came into town to help celebrate Zum Schnieder's 10th anniversary. The official party is tonight but some festivities are planned for midnight.

A ring of drafts at the bar.

The indoor beer garden.

Some of the draft beers available at the bar.

Chris was enjoying a beer at the bar. He had just finished up a hard day's night at Kibble's Rust Removal service where he toils as the night manager. The company is rumored to be highly profitable.

Here's the owner of Zum Schneider, Sylvester Schneider.

The official anniversary party is tonight, but a cake was decorated for midnight of this evening.

The cake is being carefully walked to the band stage area.

It's almost there.

Happy anniversary, Zum Schneider!

After the cake, Sylverster was given this giant mug filled with German beer.

Sylvester gave a nice toast...

And then drank from the mug.

And then the mug was passed round the bar. She's thinking, "Do I really want his cooties?"

But this person has no fear.

First he laughs at the communal mug...

And then he drinks from it!

And round it goes.

I think it's just about empty.

As soon as the mug has made its rounds the Zum Schneider's house band, The Ja Ja Jas warm up.

Sylvester kicks things off.

And the party really gets into full swing.

Here's the band in action.

Tables are cleared to allow for dancing.

And some people even started dancing on the bar.

And Sylvester ends the night with a crash of the drums and a cheers from his bandmate. Goodnight, everybody!

Review
Zum Schneider has outdoor seating, but the beer garden is inside. The indoor beer garden houses long wooden tables, an alcove off to the side with more tables and indoor trees. The entire place is candle lit and there’s a small wooden bar in the back. The walls are brick and it’s a friendly and cozy place to settle into and enjoy some German brews and food.

There’s always 12 German beers on draft and a good selection of bottled beer at Zum Schneider.
The beer selection is ever-changing, so consult their website or just show up and see what’s on tap that night. There’s also a nice varied selection of wine, but no liquor. Hey, it’s a German beer hall, go drink your martini somewhere else. There’s a good selection of German food available including: Schweinebraten—Local, farm-raised pork roasted in a dark beer gravy w/ potato dumpling and Bavarian salad; Zwiebelrostbraten—Pan roasted beef sirloin in red wine sauce, with roasted potatoes, sauerkraut and caramelized onions and Käsespätzle—Homemade spätzle with cheese, caramelized onions and bacon, served with a house salad. Bratwurst and sausage platters are also available. And of course there’s pretzels! Auf Wiedersehen and happy anniversary, Zum Schneider!

Absolutely the lightest, tastiest beer I ever had in my life was a German wheat beer while I was stationed in Germany...crisp as an autumn day in Bavaria...but it was lighter in color than the one in your photograph. Could you describe the taste for me Marty so I can compare notes? I've never come across a beer that tasty in the United States, and I have looked!

"The company is rumored to be highly profitable." I do not know why, but this made me laugh. "Don't go quoting me on that but allegedly the company does quite well for itself." I don't know...how much can you trust a man with the arms cut off his shirt?

August 19, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDianne

@Dianne: It reminds me of the old saying: "I felt bad because I had no sleeves, then I met a man who had no arms. So I stole his wallet and shoes because he couldn't hit me."

@Jaws: It tasted like beer. (Sorry I have horrible taste buds.)

August 19, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

hey now you must have tasted that first one...taste report please...after that one my taste buds would be shot too...and no pic of 365 and the communal anniversary stein and pofessor dungpie didn't get any skin...maybe tonight...KOC

This was the best post in a while. It looked like the wheels could've fallen off at any given moment.
That first beer looked like it was about 2 litres?! Sorry, I don't wanna be the party pooper, but I wouldn't have drank from the communal.
You don't know who's Hep to b square!...Cooties? Whaddaya mean cooties? No Cooties on me! (another Zappa reference)
Fun stop on the crawl.
@365: Did you happen to see what was on top of the cake?...something burning, perhaps?

August 19, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim Clack Downunder

@Tim Clack: I passed on the communal sip and that's a great Zappa reference! I think those were slices of pears on top, but I think I was on my third stein by then, so really, it could be anyone's guess!

@raginr: I was bombed, but not enough to take a swig from the communal mug. If I want someone else's spit in my mouth, I'll make out with them!

August 19, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

Oh that wasn't ears on the cake ?

August 19, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJHwang

#365 yeah right...and right after swapping spit you go to bathroom and look in the medicine cabinet...grab your boots and run like hell...KOC

@raginrr: Ha ha ha! Now THAT I remember!

August 19, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

@marty, have to agree with clacky, great post mate & it did look like the wheels could've fallen off at any stage, i'd even go as far to say Barry's branch would've snapped....good show mate keep up the hard work

August 19, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfitzy

I would have been sick from that one mug of beer you had! And the communal stein reminds me of a sacrament. Too much church. And I think I may have seen something burning on that cake...

August 19, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterkari

@Kari: I too saw something burning on top of that cake! So it wasn't just me?

@365: Was surely slices of pear. Could you think of any thing else that may have been a point of interest on top of the cake?

August 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim Clack Downunder

@Kari and Tim Clacl: There was candles burning on the cake. I'm going to bed now, goodnight everybody!

August 20, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

They could have filmed a few scenes of the movie Beerfest here ! Looks like a more festive place than Hallo Berlin in Hell's Kitchen ? A must future stop for the BBC ....... :)

August 20, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

@GENE: Hello Berlin was nice, but this place has it beat, the BBC will love it here!

August 20, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

Wow, what an amazing place!! I LOVE IT!!

It does remind me of the HOFBRAU HAUS. I also loved the indoor beer garden, it was very cool!

"And of course there’s pretzels! I love pretzels Yummy! Especially the big warm kind with spicy mustard dipping sauce.

Happy anniversary, Zum Schneider!!
