Day 208—Thursday, August 5th, 2010
Langan's

Okay, my parents are in town and I’m meeting them for dinner tonight and for the next few evenings. So the bar crawl is going to move to a daytime shift. Today I’m going to Langan’s bar which is on the way to the way to my folks hotel. Langan’s is famous for being a watering hole for writers and editors from the NY Post, in particular, former notorious columnist Steve Dunleavy. Dunleavy was a legendary, heavy-drinking scribe for the NY Post and it was always rumored that many of his columns were phoned in from this bar. Robert Downey, Jr. based his role from Oliver Stone’s movie, "Natural Born Killers" on Dunleavy and the two of them hung out before the film was made. So let’s check out this joint in the afternoon.

Here we are in the cold light of the afternoon. Ouch, that sunshine is harsh!

Inside is a safe haven from the sunshine and there's plenty of stools available at the bar. It must be deadline time at the NY Post.

Eddie the bartender serves up an ice-cold Corona.

Top of the afternoon to you.

And speaking of the NY Post, here's today's edtion sitting at the bar. Former Mayor, Rudy Giuliani's daughter got busted for shoplifting. And the headline reads: "Rudy Daughter Bust." Come on, NY Post, that's the best you've got? This from the paper that penned the legendary, "Headless Body in Topless Bar?"

Okay, that's better, that's the NY Post I know and love!

And speaking of love, check out the tin ceiling in the joint. Nice!

AT the end of the bar they have a tribute to the retired hard-boozing, NY Post columnist Steve Dunleavy, who pretty much used this Irish Tavern as his office.

Here's some photos of Dunleavy. The headline reads, "Dunleavy is Glazed." I bet he was.

Here's a long shot of the wooden bar and stools.

Magic Hat is on tap!

And these frozen drinks are available. I had a margarita and it was very tasty and cold.

Here's the back dining room.

Some of the draft beers available.

Condiments!

As I gaze out the window and look at 47th Street, I realize I'm late to meet my parents!

And here we are at dinner. Maybe I shouldn't have had that ninth beer at Langan's. Goodnight, everybody!

Review
Okay, I have to confess that I’ve overslept and my parents are coming over to my place at five o’clock this afternoon, so I have to get to a bar pronto. I don’t have time to write a review of Langan’s, so here’s what New York magazine has to say about the place:

------------------------
Profile
Ever since irascible-lovable Steve Dunleavy stumbled upon this Irish pub, it's been home away from home for New York Post journos—even Rupert Murdoch himself can be seen on occasion. The paper's columnists have been such regulars that Langan's has immortalized them, with a portrait of Dunleavy etched into one of the glass partitions and a corner featuring a photo of the late, great gossip Neal Travis.
Brunch

Sun, 11:30am–4pm; $17.95 prix-fixe, with complimentary drink

Live Music
Sat, 9pm–12:30am and Sun, noon–3pm, jazz

Pre-Theater Menu
Daily, 4pm–7:30pm; three courses, $29.95

------------------------

Okay, I’m off to this afternoon’s bar, sneeze you tomorrow. Cheers!

Nice bar! I hope we can get high and fly in the cosmos with the Cosmo frozen drink!!
Poor rich people! obliged to shoplift to survive... But she looks too young to get the "cocaine" headline yet, anyway soon the prostitution headline? Argh! That's nice to be rich! :)
Talking about "lift" , we've got a guy with lift on his shoes in my country, and he's doing same kind of stuff on the treasury coffers! looks like it's a kind of mysterious thing that rich must do to prove their existence... LOL
Cheers from France to the wombacher family !!!

Your parents look great and I am glad to see a picture of them. Spend as much time as you can with them, cherish every minute. My parents are in their eighties and I try to spend as much time with them as I can. This bar looks old school and the long wooden bar with tin ceiling makes it a real joint. That Magic hat draft for 7 bucks is a little high. I think I would try that Honkers Ale on tap. I think that even though Steve Dunleavy and his buddies hung out at this place, theres another more famous watering hole for newspaper writers like James Thurber and Cartoonist Bill Gallo. it was Costello's on East 44 St, now its called Overlook and has a history like this one. If you ever make it over there, take pictures of the cartoon walls, all done by these guys from the daily news.

Magic Hat sucks! $7 is a ripoff

August 6, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTT

Langan's looks like a good place to get your drink on and on and on and on and on... I agree, Magic Hat does suck. And $7.00 for ANY draft is a rip-off. Maybe little Giuliani was pulling a "Downey on Dunleavy" and doing research for a plum part in the new WINOna biopic? Whatever she was doing, she should hit up NYU for some cash. You just can't buy advertising like that!

Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Wombacher! Enjoy your visit! And I hope you run into Paul McCartney! But not Sean Lennon. I heard that kid's a real schmuck.

2ndly @marty....bit of trivia for you....why the lemon or lime wedge originated on the top of the Corona bottle.....i thought it was just for yuppie toff nose wankers who thought they were cool drinking them....but originally many moons ago in Mexico the lemon was used to clean the bottle top rust off the rim before drinking.....(& i have no idea why i just shared that, its way to early down here, i need coffee!!!!)

August 6, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfitzy

@fitzy: that' very interesting about the lime on the Corona bottle. I always told everyone a different story,,,,that it was Sean Penn that was spotted with a Corona at a bar in Hollywood with the Lime years ago. I like your version better, thanks.

@ Biff i was in Reno ten years ago and i was hailing a taxi and screamed hey you really loud at the cabs that were passing me.. and Sean Lennon was about where the cab was.. and he turned thinking someone was calling to him..And I had to shout at him "no, not you you dork" He seamed so dejected and sad.I'm so mean I didnt even say sorry even after I realized who he was.He was with the girls from Cibo Mato.He looked so excited when he thought someone recognized him.
damn i'm mean:(

August 6, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGidget

G'day Marty's parents. Good too see you on the crawl again.
@ Fitzy...Thats true about the lime (or lemon depending on what you can get your hands on).
I love Corona. Tastes pretty ordinary without the lime, however. It's the easiest beer to drink by far...only problem is it doesn't last long and can be a bit $$$.
I'm gonna bust out one of those coffees you mentioned. Damn cold!

@Marty...That looks like a sweet place to get sloshed. Best tin roof on the crawl so far.
