Day 281—Sunday, October 17th, 2010
Lederhosen

Okay, tonight I’ve found an indoor German Beer hall in the West Village called Lederhosen. Since the last two nights planned bars were too packed to do a proper bar crawl, I’m paranoid it’s going to happen again. Will tonight be a trifecta of too-crowded bars? We’ll never know till we go, so awaaay we go!

Okay, here we are at Lederhosen.

The front doors are open, so it's down the hallway...

To the bar, and there's a seat at the end. No improvising tonight!

And the lovely Uli pours me a German beer.

And I happily take the first sip. Cheers!

Alexi was seated next to me. He's a bassist and a musical terrorist. Check him out here: Alexi David.

The bar is colorful and loaded with decorations and German knick-knacks.

Some of the draft beers available at Lederhosen.

The walls are loaded with all things German.

And look who wandered in, Mark, who has been featured twice as a bartender on the bar crawl. Check him out here and here. Mark's the first bartender to be featured three times on the bar crawl. He call's Lederhosen, "The best fucking spot in New York City."

There's a lounge area up in the front.

And here's Kerry and Jean chilling out with a beer on the couch.

Here's the back room complete with a mural of Bavarian mountains where you really feel like you've been transported to a beer hall in Germany.

There's communal wooden benches for large groups on one side...

And smaller tables on the other side of the room.

Okay, back to the bar, because I think dinner is just about ready to be served.

And here's Uli with tonight's Sunday dinner.

I got the Rollade which is rolled beef filled with bacon, pickles, onion and mustard in brown gravy. It comes with homemade German noodles, sauerkraut and red cabbage.

Achtung! It was one of the most delicious meals I've had on the bar crawl.

Here's Dominika, Uli and Henry behind the bar. Henry took the camera and said he'd take a photo.

And the parting shot with shots. Goodnight, everybody!

Review
The hills are alive, with the sound of burping. Lederhosen bar is an indoor German beer hall located smack dab amidst some brownstones in the West Village. The front bar is colorfully decorated with Teutonic decorations such as flags, beer mugs, paintings and of course, lederhosen. There’s a lounge area in the front of the bar with couches and a fireplace, but the real attraction is the back room. The large room has wooden communal tables and two tops and the walls are covered with an impressive mural of Bavarian mountains.

They have a full bar here, but come on, you’re in a German beer hall and you’re going to order a Cosmoplitan? Just say nein and check out the varied beer selection of German suds at Lederhosen. The draft selections include: Dinkelacker Pils, Spaten Lager, Radeberger Pilsner and Weihenstephaner Hefeweiss. If you prefer bottled beer, they’ve got you covered as well, some of the choices offered are: Dinkelacker Pils, Weihenstephaner Dunkel, Augustiner Helles and Kulmbacher Moenchshof which is a black lager.

And to soak up all those suds, there’s a menu of authentic German dishes to choose from. In addition to a variety of sausages, brats and sandwiches some of the main courses include: Jagerschnitzel in mushroom gravy; Sauerbraten; Rindergoulasch and Rollade which is rolled beef filled with bacon, pickles, onion and mustard in brown gravy. I had the latter and highly suggest it.

And if you’re in the mood for something sweet after dinner, try the Irischer which is a a shot of Irish whiskey and whipped cream. Irish whiskey in a German beer hall? I guess we can all get along together, after all. Beifall!

What a meal! German's know good food. I think you really hit the jackpot for Sunday dinners. Small bar but it has the beer glasses on the shelf,,nice touch. The original Hofbrau House in Munich is huge,,,like a "Six Flags over a bar". This one is small,,,just right. I see Paulaner on tap,,,great beer. Pretty ladies all smiling and happy to see ya,,,,the way it should be. I think you may run into Mark one more time before its over,,,,he get's around.

I've been to that place. I can't remember exactly when, but it was before or after dinner somewhere nearby (Commerce maybe?). Good joint, and I had totally forgotten about it. Good choice.

@Marty: Last night's Beaver clip: I had no idea that was John Candy....blew my mind.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAl

OMG { that's Oh mein Gott } Jackpot, Marty. We're always on the prowl for the German foods, so this one goes on the list. Great find in that nabe too, now that Fedora is kaput. Have you been to the Heidelberg on your crawl yet? That's the classic tiem, complete with Mexican busboys in lederhosen.

Goosestep one for every German cookbook:
First you must occupy the kitchen.

@Al: That clip is from an early edition of SCTV before John Candy put on a lot of weight. It's one of my favorites.

@Ned Sparks: The food there is wundervoll! You need to check it out.

Love this place, especially the back room! Your own private Oktoberfest on the crawl, nice! And the food sounds and looks amazing!

There's nothing better than German food when the weather starts getting colder, and German beer or liquor to wash it down with. The best Christmases I can remember were spent in Germany.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJaws the Cabbie

@jaws...."sit tight ol' mate, i'm on me way!!!!!!!"....(funny fukin mail mate, good one!!)....us aussies are time travel experts!!!

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfitzy

@Jaws: Was it a christmas in a zombie infested near future? Did you see the movie "Shaun of the Dead"? Fucking hilarious. They lock themselves in the pub. Nice time machine. Please tell me that is your cab. Does that thing have a Flux Capacitor?

@365: Gotta love the german food. Didn't look overly apealling but thats the style of food it is. Hearty and full flavoured and designed to be enjoyed with beer.
I checked out Alexi David's site. Holy crap that guy is a novel. Recovering addict and one hell of a talented musician and very intelligent. A really good writer too. I could have spent more time reading and listening but it's 8:30 in the morning and I'm way too un motivated.
Any chance you can post up Jawsie Boy's time Machine??
Henry looks like he's straight outta Kraftwerk...."VE ARE DE ROBOTZ"....

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim "12 day's to go" Clack

@Fitzy: I agree....If you walk into the pub around the corner (where I used to work) you're instantly whisked away to the magical year of 1963....(but with 2010 beer prices). I had a Carlsburg on tap yesterday...schooner...$5.60! and it was FLAT!

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTim "12 day's to go" Clack

@Tim Clack: The German meal was great. The stuffed beef was good, but the homemade noodles were unbelievable! Yeah, I'll put up Jaws' picture later tonight, it's on my home email and I was in too much of a hurry this morning to look at it. I'll put it up when I get home. And I'm like you, I've just touched on Alexi David's website and need to check the whole thing out. That's what I love about this bar crawl, meeting such interesting people!

Lets Go Yankees !!!

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

@GENE: I'm not a baseball fan, but this year being in bars so much, I'm getting into the spirit of the playoffs and hope the Yankees can go all the way. GO YANKEES!

October 18, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

I've got almost every zombie movie ever made, including Shawn of the Dead. I built that time machine myself from a kit. Took most of a month to complete.

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJaws the Cabbie

@Jaws: That does it, I'm not only putting up the Time Machine, I'm putting up a Zombies video when I get home.

October 18, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

Yankees suck ! 2 1/2 games and they've hit in one inning :(

Oh well .....

Honey ! ... go get me another !!!

October 18, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

Mark is a busy guy! I really like the brick lounge area. And comparing to Gene's recent photos, looks like they did a good job with the back area. That food looks like I would need an antacid after! Glad you liked it though.

@raginrr: Welcome back, I thought your computer was down again. Hope you had fun on the lost weekend, was Harry Nilsson with you?

October 19, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

If it's good enough for Mark, it's good enough for me! Love the beer hall area and that front sign is tops. Plus, the food portions are HUGE! I mean, check it out, someone ate so much that he had to leave his shorts tacked to the wall! That's my kind of place!
