Saturday, October 2nd, 2010—Bar 265

Day 265—Friday, October 1st, 2010
The Flying Puck

Okay, sometimes work kicks my ass and tonight is one of those nights. As I’ve said before, I’m not going to blog about my night job, who wants to get dooced in this economy, but let’s just say tonight sucked monkey lungs on moldy whole wheat toast. It’s going on two in the morning and I’m just getting out of here. Tonight’s the 265th night and I had a special bar all picked out, but sometimes I’ve got to improvise on this crawl and tonight is one of those nights. I’m beat and I’ve only got a couple hours till the bars close, so I’m going to a hockey-themed bar that’s about a block from where I work. We’ll be there before...

You know it. See, here we are at the Flying Puck. Let's go inside and get a well-deserved drink.

Great, it's not too packed in here and plenty of seats at the bar. Only the serious drinkers are out at this hour.

And Paul, the friendly bartender serves up the first beer of the evening. And after learning this was the 265th night on the crawl, he told me it was on the house. Thanks, Paul!

Which can only lead to the age-old traditional "Wearin' of the Guinness."

There's a decent selection of drafts at the Flying Puck.

Hocky art and photos dominate the dark, wooden walls.

And the skylights are also devoted to hockey imagery.

And of course all the latest hockey is on the multiple TV's in the bars.

Wooden tables line the wall opposite the bar.

Australia is a recurring theme here on the bar crawl and who do I meet on this night out? More Australians! Shane and Lorraine were in town from Adelaide, Australia and wished me well on the bar crawl.

And of course Shane was watching the AFL game on the TV.

The center of the bar all wooden and mirrory.

A close-up of some of the lit-up spirits on display.

Seated next to me at the bar was Paul's roommate, Julie.

And speaking of Paul, here he is with co-worker, Rachel. And Shane jumps into the photo at the last minute.

A shot down the long, red bar.

Here's Mindee and Chris who were in from Cortland, New York. Mindee told me that Cortland has some great bars, so if I can figure out how to get there, maybe I'll make it a stop on the crawl.

Rachel's invented her own shot at the bar called, The Blue Ray.

The parting shot. Goodnight, everybody!

Review
If you’re a New York Rangers fan, The Flying Puck is a handy pit stop before you go to the game at the Garden. It’s located about a block away and it’s the new kid on the block, having just opened up its doors about a year ago. The bar is clean, red and lengthy and hockey art dominates the dark wooden walls and there’s stained glass hockey skylights overhead. Overead the lit up bar are plasma TV’s with sporting games and of course the latest hockey matches. The bartenders and staff are friendly and the crowd is a pretty equal mix of locals and tourists.

There’s a full bar and a good selection of bottled and draft beers. There’s also food at the Flying PUck with the usual burgers and sandwiches, but there’s also specialty items on the menu including Irish Nachos and Margherita Pizza.

And make sure to try one of Rachel’s patented Blue Ray shots, but watch out, those things are stronger than they appear! Cheers!

Bonus Photos

Australian 365 commentator Tim Clack just got a new gig at a new bar and restaurant way down under in the Land of Oz and he was kind enough to take some photos and take us on an extra bar crawl. Tim snapped a lot of photos, so I thought I’d run it in two parts over the weekend. Here’s part one, Take it away, Tim!

Welcomte to Toronto Bay Bistro @ Royal Motor Yacht Club Toronto (Australia, Not Canada!). Some other ways to pronounce Toronto are "Tronn," "Ronno." "Ron" or my personal fave "The Toe."

Whaddaya havin'?

Decisions, decisions. Great selection of tap beers but I don't recommend the Fat Yak.

Obligatory Baroom mirror shot.

Night time view from the balcony.

Nice work, Tim! Stay tuned for part II, tomorrow!

Flying Puck is really an excellent bar. One of the most beautiful back bars with wooden arch and lit up bottles. Is that tile on the floor? if so it looks great. Congrats on 265 and now we start the countdown. What a great site and all of NYC bars and restaurant should be very thankful of your idea (free publicity) here and in this economy least they could do is spring for the drinks. @Tim Clack: those draft beers you took picture of ive never seen,(except Carlsberg),,but I bet they are good and strong. Marty,,,take a nap,,,you look tired.

Way to go the extra mile after a hard days night! Or should I say the extra block! LOL! Looks like you found a good spot with friendly people. What was the original destination?

October 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBarfly

@Al: That's why I slept in, a long night last night! 100 to go!

@Barfly: I'll reveal that destination next week.

@ 365 Looks like a helluva fun stopover Marty, seems like it cheered you right up after your killer day at work! And thanks to this website I'm now familiarized with a sound bite that's brand new to me...dooced. (Did I just hear George Orwell rolling over in his grave...yes, I think I did!)
@ Tim Clack; hats off to you, dude for starting your own virtual bar crawl...great pictures!
@ Fitzy; Say, I was wondering if Koala bears make any distinctive noises when they're pissed. You've said they can be grumpy, and I take it they do things from time to time that never get shown on Quantas commercials. Does Barry growl snarl or bark or anything when he's getting ready to bust a move?

October 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJaws the Cabbie

@Jaws: Dooce has a good website: www.dooce.com. It's where I met 365 commentator Kari, who has a fun website of her own: http://utahleafgirl.blogspot.com/.

And where the fuck is Fitzi?

October 2, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

firstly @marty fuck you shitlips!...... ahh thats better.....

@clacky....when they are pissed i dare say they would, i'm sorta not allowed to slip the little fellas the sly stubbie here & there even though Barry has hit me up to smuggle piss in for him & his girlfriends all the time..... wot ya never heard a koala have a shag?? its the most gutteral pig like snorts..... & the males chase the female to the extremities of the crown of the tree & basically rapes the female.....its not something you would take a group of primary school kids to witness, it would pretty well fuck the kids right up for life i dare say....

& yeah Barry growled at me yesterday...we had a kids family fun day on at the hospital & the little prick had enough of his formula when i was feeding him....so he has turned his back, brown eyed all the kids & peed at the same time, then growled at me when i tried to turn him back around....fuck that i just left him alone....

& wots tha "FATYAK" beer like clacky? & fuck the AFL grand final, fuck Eddie Mcquire crying when his precious Collingwood won, just fuck aerial ping pong in general....

g'day to Shane & Lorraine....hope marty looked after you guys..

October 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfitzy

Secondly @Shitzylips: Fuck you right back Fitzlips! Cheers to you and everybody else!

October 2, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

@365: Onya marty! To the countdown! I'm surprised there wasn't a few more people out and about. I'm all about serious drinkers. Thanks for letting me share a slice of my part of the world...
G'day to Shane and Lorraine. Collingwood suck.

@everyone: Thanks for the comments on the Yacht club. It's been kicking my arse and much busier than my last job but it's been fun and the food is excellent and great crew to work with.

@AL: These are all the standard tap beers in Aus...VB, Tooheys OLD, NEW, Carlton Draught and Carlsberg are the full strength, Pure Blonde and Carlton super dry are the very easy to drink low carb beers. Way down the end is a Tasmanian Cascade premium light (low alcohol). And the Fat Yak is horrible. Thats a western Australian boutique beer. Tastes like Yaks piss.
@Barfly: There was a bar tender but she was busy talking to her boyfriend on the phone and declined to be photographed.

@Fitzylips: Are you watching the Grand Final today? Not sure if i'll watch it but will back the dragons. Baz needs an attitude adjustment.

thirdly@marty....hahaha you funny fuka!!!

@clacky.....haha funny, talking of Bazza....i just got back from the hospital & when i 1st walked in & here is my boss going off his head with his thumb under running water in the sink, claret fairly pissin out of this big chunk missing from his thumb.....he had to try & move Barry this morning so he could register how much leaf he'd eaten overnite (Barry likes to sit right on top of his leaf for the record)....we use a towel to wrap them in when we move them so if they bite or claw they go into the towel 1st....well Bazza has bitten thru the towel & subsequently removed a large chunk of thumb off the boss....hahaha cheers Barry!!!!...protect ya leaf matey!!!!!

October 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfitzy

@Tim Clack: Thank you for sending in the photos. Part II tomorrow everybody!

October 2, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

@clacky....yeah mate i'll be watching the GF FOR SURE!!!, go the roosters!!!! what time is kick off? 3pm?.....i might miss the start if thats the case, i have to duck back to work & feed Baz at 3, but that should only take1/2 hr max if theres not too many tourists around, but its shithouse 'hardhat' weather here today so hopefully the 'terrorists' will stay away... then back to me mate Mal's for barbie, beers & blassfomy

October 2, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterfitzy

@Fitzy: If you get a chance, maybe a few shots of the barbie at Mal's? If not, have fun anyway, mate!

October 2, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

@Fitz: I think kick off is around 5:30. Jump on line mate and check the NRL website. Shannon is up in Grafton this weekend. If I didn't have to work I would have grabbed a lift up to your place for the arvo! I protected a leafy substance last night too then I watched the Cure and country legend George Jones on you tube...country music. Is there any substitute?

@365: Did you catch that video I sent you? Thats Aussie hard rock at it's finest. The Angels have been around since the mid 70's and have endured several line up changes over the years. I was just totally impressed with that guitar sound. It's what would happen if Gibson and Fender made porn with Marshall amps. That was the original line up without their frontman Doc Neeson. My AC/DC tribute band opened for these guys at a biker club a few years back and funnily enough this footage was filmed at a Bon Scott tribute show in Perth. Rock on Bon and Rock on The Angels!
There is so much vintage Aussie rock that would tear your head off, Marty, that probably wouldn't be very well known in the U.S...I'm saving my big AUSSIE juke box request for when I'm on the CRAWL for real. Stay tuned...
p.s Expect a few videos in the coming days/weeks/hours/minutes of some cool stuff that you'd probably dig but don't need to post them....just crank them!

TO: Rock'n'Roll!!

@ Fitzy; I typed in angry koala at the You tube site...and got an eyeful! They really do make a wide range of noises...including one hell of a growl! They even had a video of one chasing a guy on a motor scooter down the road. You won't have to tell me twice not to rub old Barry the wrong way, should I ever make his acquaintance!

October 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJaws the Cabbie

Hey, you're lucky to even HAVE a job! HA HA HA! Glad you found a nice friendly place to wind down after your shift. I don't dig hockey so much but because of your good review I'd still go to the Flying Puck! Happy hundred mark! Here's to 99 BARS off the wall!

October 3, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBiff

HAHA I first thought "Flying puke" when reading flying puck !!! Maybe because I'm looking for flying puke lately!!!! There's a Fairy in my neighborhood, with that crazy attraction and as I walk down almost everyday on the street passing by, I'm looking for the flying puke!!! I really don't want a puke shower!!! ;)
Hey, the floor looks pretty nice in this bar !!!!!!

@ Tim : Thanks for sharring! The Fat Yak beer as a funny name but ok, if it's degusting I understand the attractive name!! That's a tourist trap! I would have run into!!

@ Jaws: yes, I heard Georges too!! It's why I can't use my real name on web, with all the crock-crap coming out of my mouth every minutes, I would be on a 'don't hire list" for some decades !!! Also you can't miss me, I'm the only one with that name in France, and may in the world!!

@Fitzy: My sister would say: "Koalas male are like humans male, The cutest they are, the more asshole prick they are too!!" HaHa! oh, and do the koalas male try to fuck human women when they have their periods?? Iguanas do! I got the experience and it's not funny!!! lol

To Rock n roll !!!

HEY......HEY.......HEY!!!

now, wait just one minute here Marty...

I take offense to the negative MONKEY (lung) reference!!!

questions:
what is in that blue ray?

October 3, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

@Shannon: Come on...I love monkeys, but monkey lungs on wheat toast is not a pleasant thing! And as far as the ingerdients in the Blue Ray, that's Rachel's secret, you'll have to go and try to get it out of her!

@Tim Clack: Shit, I just realized I accidentally deleted it, can you send it again?

October 3, 2010 | Registered Commenter365 Beers

A correction needs to be made here about the beer Fat Yak. It is, in fact, brewed in the Dandenongs in Victoria by Matilda Bay Brewing Company. It is a craft beer in the traditional North American Pale Ale style and its bloody awesome! This is our most favoured beer of all (although we also loved the American Pale Ales!!!)

If i have one good thing to say about Victoria its that they know how to brew a decent beer - so many microbreweries ... mmmmm, maybe i should add some of these to the crawl website once we are back home.

Cheers from Prague where we are paying just less than $2 for half a litre of beer! : )

oh yeah - Collingwood suck - Go the Swannies!!
